Medicare Supplement Plans 2021
It might seem like a long time until 2021, but if that is when you turn 65, then you need to know about Medicare Supplement plans for 2021 and what they are able to do for you.
These are powerful medical insurance plans that work alongside Original Medicare to give seniors protection against rising healthcare costs.
If your medical care seems too expensive for you and your insurance isn’t going a good enough job covering your expenses for you, then you need to consider Medicare Supplements.
These plans go by another name as well- Medigap.
That is because they are great at filling in coverage gaps left by Original Medicare.
While the Original Medicare is a great starter coverage plan for seniors, in many cases it is simply not enough, leaving people with too many expenses for them to deal with.
Many seniors struggle to meet their medical costs each year, and they have to add on expensive coverage plans to their Original Medicare plan to get adequate coverage.
It can sometimes be more effective to add a Supplement plan, though, than any coverage plan that comes from your union or your employer.
Many seniors benefit from Supplement plans and the protection and cost savings that they produce.
Which Plans Are Available for 2021?
The lineup of Supplement plans does change occasionally, so it’s fair to ask which plans will still be left for next year.
New plans may be added and some of the current plans may be taken away.
This happens every so often, though no major changes are expected for 2021.
The top plan for most seniors is Medicare Supplement Plan G.
This is a high coverage plan, which means that it covers most of the supplemental expenses.
Under Plan G, a person would be covered for all of the following healthcare costs:
- Medicare Part A’s copayment, hospice coinsurance and annual deductible
- Medicare Part B’s excess charges and copayment
- Nursing care coinsurance
- Foreign travel exchange (up to 80% per incident)
- The first three pints of blood a year
Plan G is a powerful plan with lots of coverage, but if it is too expensive and offers too much coverage for you, then you could go with the lower cost Plan N.
This is one of the most cost-effective supplemental plans you will find, as it covers you for Medicare Part A’s annual deductible, copayment and hospice coinsurance.
It also covers nursing care coinsurance costs, three pints of blood, and foreign travel exchange costs up to 80% per incident.
It covers some of the Part B copayments for you but asks that you cover the rest.
If you are looking for a lower coverage plan than either of these, then there are plenty of them to pick from.
Just realize that not all insurance companies will sell the entire lineup of Medicare Supplements.
Most of them pick and choose a few plans that they think will be most important to their customers.
They choose the ones that sell the best or that offer a variety of coverage options, and if you cannot find the plan that you are looking for at one insurer, then you can just go to another one who has that plan.
You can use our site to search by plan so that you can see which insurers are offering that plan and how much they are going to charge for it.

Changes to the Lineup Seniors Should Know
You will probably want to know about some recent changes that have occurred with Medicare Supplements.
These plans have received a shakeup over the past few years that drastically affects what’s on offer and which medical expenses are being covered.
Medicare Part B’s deductible isn’t actually being covered by Medicare Supplements anymore because of the plans that have been removed from the 2021 lineup.
Plan F was once the most popular of all the Supplement plans, but it has been removed from Medicare’s selection of Supplement plans.
Now, the only people who can even access Plan F and its comprehensive medical benefits are those who were already enrolled with it when it was removed.
If you still have Plan F, you can keep it and enjoy its full coverage, but be warned that if you ever drop it, you can’t enroll with it again.
You will also have to pay increasingly high rates for this plan since its subscriber base is dropping off.
It is known as a closed risk pool plan, with higher rates and a lower subscriber base that make it a poor choice for most seniors.
Plan C is in the same boat. It was removed from the lineup a few years ago, but if you were already enrolled in Plan C, then you can still stay signed up with it.
Once again, the rates are likely to increase dramatically over the next few years as the subscriber base for Plan C shrinks.
After all, many of Plan C’s subscribers will be switching to other coverage plans because they are going to notice that Plan C is simply not a good value choice, in many cases.
That is why these two plans were restricted and removed over the past few years- they were just not holding their value, and consumers were finding better choices among the other available Supplement plans.
Another change that occurred to the Supplement plans as well is the addition of Medicare Supplement High Deductible Plan G.
This is a version of Plan G that offers the exact same coverage as the traditional plan, but it has a lower monthly premium and a higher annual deductible.
That trade off makes it a good choice for many seniors, and you may want to look at the rates on this plan to see if it is more affordable for you than the conventional version.
