Medigap Plan F

There is no other supplementary insurance plan that provides better coverage for your healthcare expenses than Medigap Plan F. It belongs to the line of Medicare Supplement plans, which are designed to fill in coverage gaps left by Original Medicare. Plan F will eliminate all your worries when it comes to the cost of healthcare as it covers all items considered as supplemental medical expenses, giving you peace and mind and security.

Not everyone will consider Plan F as the perfect plan for them. It has a lot of coverage, but it is not really an advantage, especially if you will not use all those covered items. Plan F also commands a high price for its wide range of coverage provided. For someone who is relatively healthy and who can only afford much, Plan F may feel somewhat extravagant.

However, if you have a long list of medical care requirements, it is a wise decision to invest some amount in a Medigap Plan F. If you can afford it, Plan F will take care of every cost that your Original Medicare will not cover. But if your needs are not that much, then other Medigap plans can very well provide your requirements.

If you are having difficulties choosing which Medigap plan to get or to decide whether you need it or not, you will find help in this article. We will also help you decide if Plan F is the best for you by discussing the coverage it offers and comparing it with other plans under the Medicare Supplement line.

How much does Plan F cost?

So, how much do you have to shell out for a Medigap Plan F? Actually, there is no exact price for this plan, or any Medigap plan, for that matter. The reason is that Medicare allows different insurance providers to set their prices for a medical insurance plan. So, the price of a particular plan will vary depending on the insurance company selling the policy.

The good thing about this is that there is a chance that you can find a provider selling Medigap Plan F at a lower price. Having all the coverage afforded by Medigap Plan F and getting it at such a low price is already a good deal. You do not have to worry if there will be changes in the coverage. The price you pay for a plan will not affect its coverage. Medicare does not allow any insurance company to reduce, modify, or customize the contents of a Medicare Supplement plan. There is only one set of standard coverage for Plan F. So, a little diligence and research on your part will help you score a good deal.

Getting Medigap Plan F will entail paying for a monthly premium, on top of what you need to pay for basic Medicare. It would be best if you also had Original Medicare first before you can sign up for any Medigap plan. So, there is the cost of Medigap and Original Medicare that you need to take care of.

What does Medigap Plan F offers?

Medigap Plan F

So, what does Medigap Plan F will cover for you? Plan F is famous for having the longest list of coverage in the entire Medigap line. This only means that it covers all supplemental medical expenses.

These supplemental expenses include the following:

  • Medicare Part B excess charges, or those charges that you need to pay if you are getting Part B services at a medical facility not fully accepting Medicare;

  • Medicare Part B deductible;

  • Medicare Part B copayment;

  • Medicare Part A deductible;

  • Medicare Part A copayment;

  • Medicare Part A hospice insurance;

  • Nursing care insurance;

  • Up to 80 percent of foreign emergency travel costs, if there will be a need to transport you to another country for medical emergencies; and

  • Three pints of blood a year

Carrying all these times makes Medigap Plan F an extensively comprehensive plan. Other plans offer the majority of the items on the list. Still, they are not as complete as Plan F. However, you have to evaluate if you need all these things because Plan F does not come in cheap. Some people opt for other plans which are more affordable but have lesser coverage. They find that paying for some out-of-pocket expenses may be easier than paying for a full Plan F.

How can I sign up for Medigap Plan F?

Once you have chosen an insurance provider where you will get Medigap Plan F from, you need to go to their website and sign up online. You can also pay them a visit in their office, branches, or outlets or call them over the phone to start your application process. There are forms and documents which need to be filled up. You will wait for a couple of days, and then you will get a reply from the insurance provider.

Enrollment can only be done on a specific period, in any case. But first, you need to be 65 years old US citizen to be eligible for Medicare, which also happens to be a prerequisite before you can have a Medigap plan. You may be eligible even if you are younger than 65 years old if you have specific medical conditions that qualify you for Medicare coverage. These qualifications are the same across all Medigap plans.

Just like what has been previously mentioned in this article, you need to have the coverage of Original Medicare. Medigap is created to work alongside Original Medicare efficiently. It will only be functional when it is paired with the basic Medicare plan.

You will not be allowed to sign up with Medigap Plan F if you have other insurance plans that will overlap with its coverage. Overlapping coverage is not permitted under Medicare. If you have these kinds of insurance plans such as other Medigap plans, Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part C, or healthcare coverage from your employer or unions, you need to drop it if you want to get Medigap Plan N.

There is no need to sign up with Medigap Plan F if you believe that you do not need all the items it offers. Having a high-coverage plan is appealing, but it will cost you a lot, so you better think wisely. Other high-coverage plans have almost the same coverage, except for some items. They cost less than Plan F. Medigap Plan G and Plan N are both high-coverage plans just like Plan F. These are your two options if Plan F is too costly for you.

Plan G covers everything just like Plan F but will ask you to pay the Medicare Part B deducible.

Plan N also covers a lot except for Part B excess charges, a couple of small copayments, and Part B deductible.

These two plans are good options for a high-coverage plan. They cost less than Plan F and are offering the exact items that you may need.  The best plan for you is the one that will address all your needs and, at the same time, work with your financial capacities. The key here is to spend some time to look and compare what each Medigap plan offers and how much they will cost you. Finding the most cost-effective Medigap plan will ensure value for your money.
